Fresh facts have emerged on the rivalry that rocked and split Africa’s most promising record label, Mo’Hits. The record label owned and ran by Don Jazzy and D’banj with promising acts such as Wande Coal, Dr. Sid, Prince and Kayswitch broke early this year due to what the two parties barely divulged but many believed was overriding ambitions and disproportionate share of the company’s profits, writes BIODUN KUPOLUYI
E24-7 MAGAZINE can authoritatively reveal that contrary to speculations, insecurity, petty rivalry and fear of the unknown and bad blood crept into the record company and gradually divided thehonchos and their cohorts. An audio file in the possession of E24-7 MAGAZINE revealed deep seated anger, hit back at authority were responsible more than claims that ambition and irreconcilable differences caused the rift.
Mavin Records artiste and Over the moon crooner, Dr. Sid is still bitter about the power play that characterized his heyday in the defunct Mo-hits headed by Don Jazzy and the multiple award winning artiste, Dbanj. The dental doctor in a boisterous chat with (names withheld) some friends including Mavins’ mate, Wande Coal on seat in faraway South Africa some weeks ago spoke disparagingly about D’banj.
His pronouncements gave an indication of too much negativity and too little control in the defunct company’s environment. Not once, but twice, Dr. Sid wanted his Mavin’s mate, Wande Coal to comment or confirm his claims but the burly, ebony- looking singer hedged, saying: “I don’t know.”
Dr. Sid with his voice hitting the roof blamed the ‘star’ of the Oyato crooner for his career that refused to fly. According to him, “Why don’t they know my name? Because D’banj’s brand and his star are too big and it overshadowed me and all of us.’
He turned to Wande: “I dey lie?’ I dey lie?
Wande: “I don’t know.”
He believed Dbanj did more harm than repair to his career. “D’banj has done more negative to my career than positive.”
In a bellow of rage, he made disparaging comments about D’banj’s claim to fame, blamed him for his’ woes’ and believed he had more control in the defunct Mo Hits such that he was not allowed to shine. Observers of the industry would be shocked in view of the fact Dr. Sid’s claim to fame are his two songs.-Pop Champagne and Over the Moon given life by D’banj and his younger brother, Kayswitch respectively.
In the heat of the crisis that hit the record company, it could be recalled that Dr. Sid broke the silence on Twitter ascribing to Don Jazzy, the undisputable creative force behind MoHits. E24-7: In the heat of the crisis, you broke the silence and it’s like DON Jazzy or nobody?
SID: No, the truth of the matter is, I meant that statement because there is a lot of people’s perception of who DON Jazzy is and his person. Some people have started downplaying and insulting his person and I took offence because as someone who knows how we worked and how things were put together and how we created music, he’s the driving force, he is the creative mind. We come up with ideas but he is the one that sees how all the ideas come together to make the music and drive the brand the way it needs to be driven. So I was offended at people down playing that though I understand that it’s their perception they don’t really know or have the information that is why I came out and said: “ You know what?
